CORRUGATED CARDBOARD

Properties of corrugated cardboard

It is a widely used solution in TFL and construction industry. Cardboard sheets are made in the process of ironing multiple pulp layers. As an effect we get a material which is more durable and stiff than ordinary paper, and at the same time elastic enough to be easily fitted to a chosen shape. Corrugated cardboard may consist of two, three or five levels of paper connected by a corrugated layer. The more paper levels, the higher the stiffness and endurance. Corrugated cardboard in a roll or a sheet is used to secure loads and fill the space inside the package. It is worth to mention that cardboard sheets are an eco-friendly solution. A roll or a sheet is made of waste paper and a used product is recyclable, meaning that using cardboard does not generate additional waste.

Parameters:

  • Format:
  • Layers
  • Roll weight:
  • Roll width:
  • Roll length:
  • Rolls, sheets
  • 2 layer (roll), 3 - 5 layer (roll)
  • 175 g - 190 g
  • 20 cm - 160 cm
  • 10cm - 150cm
Advantages of corrugated cardboard:
  • excellent shock-absorbing and protective features,
  • low weight and low price,
  • easy to cut – easily adjusts to load dimensions and efficiently uses the cardboard (little waste),
  • recyclable,
  • diversity of products translates into different properties of specific cardboard types,
  • elasticity – easy to fit to different shapes.

      Model products:

      rolka tektury

      Corrugated cardboard in a roll

Flexible cardboard consisting of two layers is flexible and durable, it’s distinguished by high tear resistance. It can be used as a protective, filling, covering material, and even an underlay for floor coverings.
      tektura 3w

      Sheet of 3-layer cardboard

3-layer spacers are used to pack fragile and delicate items. They are also used in construction as a securing element and as an acoustic and thermal insulator, which is a base that separates the concrete screed from the floor made of panels or tiles.
      tektura 5w

      Sheet of 5-layer cardboard

Rigid spacer, available in various thicknesses and waves: BC cardboard - its thickness is from 6 to 7 mm; BE cardboard - available in a thickness from 3.7 to 5 mm.
      Types of cardboard
Mac-Graf sells cardboard manufactured by a trusted Polish producer. As a wholesaler of packaging materials we supply our Customers with varied packaging materials and packaging accessories. Commonly used cardboard is simply essential on our offer.
This product is available in four variants: as cardboard sheets, forms, interlayers and corrugated cardboard in a roll. Interlayers and sheets are available in different variants: 2-layer, 3-layer and 5-layer. Cardboard in rolls is 2-layer and the rolls are 20 to 160 cm wide.

      Application of corrugated cardboard

      • forwarding, e-commerce, courier services – to fill spaces inside pacages, absorb shocks, cover loads,
      • furniture, electronic, automotive industry, producers of glass and ceramics – protecting elements from mechanical damage, scratches, breakage (during transport and storage),
      • construction and repair – protective cardboard is useful as acoustic and thermal insulation under panels and as protection of ready-made floor before continuing repair works.

      FAQ

What do the flutes in corrugated cardboard mean?

The flutes in corrugated cardboard refer to the type and size of the waves located between the layers of paper. These waves impact the cardboard’s properties, such as strength, rigidity, and shock-absorbing capacity. There are different types of flutes, labeled with letters, which define their height and density:

Types of flutes in corrugated cardboard:

      • Type A:

        • Wave height: 4.5 – 4.7 mm
        • Use: Best for shock absorption and protection, used for making boxes that require high durability.
      • Type B:

        • Wave height: 2.5 – 3.0 mm
        • Use: Resistant to punctures, suitable for smaller packages and products requiring good mechanical protection.
      • Type C:

        • Wave height: 3.5 – 4.0 mm
        • Use: A versatile flute, combining shock absorption and puncture resistance, most commonly used in standard cartons.
      • Type E (Micro flute):

        • Wave height: 1.1 – 1.5 mm
        • Use: Very thin flute used for small packaging, ideal for prints and aesthetically pleasing packaging for premium products.
      • Type F:

        • Wave height: 0.8 – 1.0 mm
        • Use: Even thinner than Type E, used for lightweight packaging and high-quality visual packaging production.
      • Type G:

        • Wave height: 0.5 – 0.8 mm
        • Use: The thinnest flute, used for packaging delicate products such as electronics.

What is the use of corrugated cardboard in construction?

Corrugated cardboard, although primarily associated with packaging, is also used in construction. Due to its lightness, strength, and eco-friendliness, it is utilized in various areas, such as:

      • Protecting surfaces during construction work (floors, walls, windows, doors)
      • As temporary formwork (creating molds for concreting, reinforcing lightweight structures)
      • For thermal and acoustic insulation
      • For temporary lightweight structures (partition walls, architectural models)
      • For protecting products, tools, and machinery during storage and transportation.

Which side of corrugated cardboard should be used to package a product?

The product should be packaged with the smooth side of the corrugated cardboard facing inward, towards the product. The smooth layer on the inside minimizes the risk of scratching or damaging delicate surfaces, such as glass, ceramics, or electronics, and adheres better to the product, which further stabilizes the contents.

The corrugated structure should be facing outward to absorb shocks and impacts, providing better protection against external factors. This also increases the rigidity and strength of the packaging, ensuring resistance to crushing during transport.

Is corrugated cardboard suitable for floor protection?

Yes, corrugated cardboard is suitable for floor protection and is commonly used for this purpose during construction, renovation, or painting work. It protects the floor from dirt and mechanical damage, and also provides a cushioning layer for shocks and vibrations. It is also eco-friendly and more cost-effective than many alternative solutions, such as rubber mats.

How to read flute markings in corrugated cardboard?

Flute markings in corrugated cardboard refer to the type and size of the flutes in the cardboard structure, which affect its strength, cushioning, and applications. Letters such as A, B, C, E, F, etc., refer to the height and density of the flute in the corrugated cardboard.

      • Flute A

        • Height: 4.5 – 4.7 mm
        • Best for cushioning, but less resistant to crushing.
      • Flute B

        • Height: 2.5 – 3.0 mm
        • Resistant to crushing and punctures, with less cushioning.
      • Flute C

        • Height: 3.5 – 4.0 mm
        • Versatile properties, a compromise between cushioning and crush resistance.
      • Flute E

        • Height: 1.1 – 1.5 mm
        • Thin flute, good rigidity and crush resistance, but less cushioning.
      • Flute F (Microflute)

        • Height: 0.8 – 1.0 mm
        • Very thin, lightweight, used for small, high-quality aesthetic packaging.

What properties does corrugated cardboard have?

Corrugated cardboard is a versatile material used in many industries. It is resistant to crushing, provides cushioning, is lightweight, eco-friendly, offers thermal and acoustic insulation, has an aesthetic appearance, and is easily available.

How to select corrugated cardboard based on flutes?

To protect delicate products, choose flutes with a greater height (e.g., A, C), which provide good cushioning. For heavy loads, combinations of flutes (e.g., BC) with high mechanical strength are appropriate. To enhance the aesthetics of packaging, opt for thin flutes (e.g., E, F) that are suitable for printing.
